- Assembling the parts properly:
An important prerequisite is to get the parts together to work as a unit. For that you need two small screwdrivers- a slot head and a Philips variant along with tweezers and a toothbrush. Also keep the wrench and the equipment list which comes with reel close at hand.
- Taking the parts apart properly:
When taking the reel apart make sure to lay down the parts on a small light-colored cloth sheet so that the parts are safe and easily distinguishable. Assembling and dissembling the reel properly is a very important step in to maintain good condition of your fishing rods and reels.
- Assembling the proper cleaning equipment:
Proper equipment such as a pan full of water, oils and lubricants such as the lighter fluids and specialized reel oils should be used.
- Do not put metal against metal:
All reel parts are designed to work with metal on fiber. Make sure you keep this information handy.
- Clean parts with biodegradable products:
Never should you clean reel parts with gasoline or similar products because it can melt plastic components. Instead, use biodegradable products such as Simple Green or a toothbrush which won’t hurt the more sensitive and plastic parts of your fishing rods and reels thus giving you easy fishing reel maintenance without unknowingly causing any damage.
- Oil bearings:
You should always clean the bearings with a fluid which is less viscous in nature. That will help in easy removal of dirt and grunge which have accumulated on surface. Make sure they spin after you are done cleaning, which is important because you can tell whether the bearings are cleaned or not. Use one drop per bearing and use toothpicks to make the fluid go in.
- Grease the gears:
Most importantly you should always apply grease to the bottom of the teeth because applying them on the top part will make grease spill everywhere when you spin the reel. Just a light coating is enough, again use a toothpick or a toothbrush to make sure fluid has properly lubricated the walls of reel’s teeth. Maintaining the gears and bearings prolong the life of your fishing rods and reels.
Holding it the right way while assembling and dissembling it is very important. Anglers are recommended to hold the reel in their left hand and work with their right.
Remove and Secure fishing line before removing the spool. You should either strip the line of your spool or secure it with masking tapes before removing spool of reel. I f not done, line may get caught between spool and frame making removal very difficult.
